Chincoteague Causeway

CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. - Virginia State Police are investigating a crash on the Chincoteague Causeway late Friday that claimed the life of a 25-year-old man.

Police say they were called to the Route 175 Causeway just after 10:15 p.m. on June 5 on reports of a two-vehicle crash. According to investigators, a Ford Explorer was driving east towards Chincoteague in the westbound lane when it struck a Toyota Camry heading west.

The impact of the collision sent the Ford Explorer over the jersey wall and into the marsh, police say. The driver of the Explorer, 25-year-old Tyler Crockett, of New Church, died at the scene. The driver of the Camry suffered minor injuries.

The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company announced via social media that a large portion of Route 175 was closed at about 11:15 p.m. due to the crash. The road reopened shortly before 3 a.m., according to the fire company.

Virginia State Police say the investigation into the crash remains active.
