SEAFORD, DE - Seaford city leaders revealed a new roadmap for the Nylon Capital Shopping Center, giving a timeline for future updates at the site.
The updated timeline for the highly anticipated project was presented at Seaford's city council meeting Tuesday evening.
The new roadmap estimates demolition at the center wrapping up by the end of the year.
"We're finishing up some of the odds and ends," Michael Meibaum, CEO of Meibaum Excavation, a contractor on the project, said. "We're gonna be punching out the back of the old Woolworth building, and we're gonna be taking out all the concrete to make a drive aisle so you can drive cars through there."
A map outlining which buildings would be finished and when was also presented at Tuesday's city council meeting.
"In the next twelve months, TidalHealth is gonna have their building built, DelTech's gonna have their building built, and BrightBloom's gonna have their building built," Seaford Mayor Matt MacCoy told WBOC Wednesday.
City officials estimate the project to cost roughly 60 million dollars. City leaders told WBOC that they estimate hundreds of jobs will be created from the future shopping center.
Seaford's Director of Economic Development, Trisha Newcomer, said the completed project will bring in a great amount of revenue for the city.
"It's gonna be huge," Newcomer said. "From a regional perspective, there's gonna be folks that not only are gonna come here from our neighboring communities to shop, or to use our services, but the job opportunities that will be there for them as well, it's phenomenal."
Seaford's mayor told WBOC that the project is sentimental for many in the city.
"At one point in time this was the hub at the city of Seaford," McCoy said. "Now we get a chance to bring that back up and bring new businesses into the area, maybe even some old businesses back to Seaford. It's very exciting because now the city can see that their core is coming back."
Councilman Alan Quillen, who said he was born and raised in Seaford, said he has memories at the former hotspot.
"I swam in this pool right here as a child and have spent many hours out here," Quillen said. "This is an area that has been close to my heart for a long time and to see it come back to life is gonna be great."
Off of the updated timeline, city leaders said the first tenant neighbors can expect to see open is Community Bank Delaware, in the left-most building of the shopping center. Those officials said the building hopes to be open by the end of January.
