Updated: Suspect Arrested for Two Accomack County Murders

Gary Joseph Fleig

OAK HALL, Va.- Police have arrested a suspect charged in connection with two separate homicides that occurred in Accomack County.

Gary Joseph Fleig, 45, of New Church, Va., is being held without bond in connection with both incidents.

The first incident happened the evening of Dec. 4 when Virginia State Police were requested by the New Church Fire Department to respond to a house fire at the 6000 block of Lankford Highway. The New Church Fire Department responded to the fire and soon discovered its occupant, 62-year-old Edward Bruce Mears Jr., dead inside the home.

Fleig was later identified as one of the suspects and arrested for first- and second-degree murder, arson (occupied dwelling), burglary, concealing a stolen firearm, use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, and possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

Efforts are still being undertaken by the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation to identify and locate other possible suspects involved in the ongoing investigation.

The Accomack County Sheriff's Office on Thursday obtained arrest warrants charging Fleig with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Firearm by Felon, and Possession of a Stolen Firearm in connection with a deadly shooting that happened in Oak Hall on Monday morning.

Sheriff W. Todd Wessells said that just before 8 a.m. Monday, his office received a report of a body in a field behind a home in the 9200 block of Lankford Highway in Oak Hall, Virginia.

Upon deputies' arrival on the scene they discovered an unresponsive man suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced deceased on scene.

The body was identified as that of Maurice Lamont Fiddermon, 43, from Temperanceville, Va.

Fleig is also one of three people charged in connection with a burglary, assault and attempted arson that happened in the Pocomoke area.

The investigation into the two Virginia homicides is continuing and authorities say there may be other suspects involved.
