A New Exhibit Is On Display At The Fort Miles Museum

LEWES, Del. - The exhibit titled Oil Still Bleeds: A Relic and Remembrance of the Battleship USS Arizona is now display at the Fort Mile Museum in Cape Henlopen State Park. 

The exhibit features a 650 pound piece of metal fragment from the USS Arizona, a ship that was bombed and sunk on Dec. 7th 1941, during the attack of Pearl Harbor. 

Cliff Geisler, who is on the board of directors of the Fort Miles Historical Association, was responsible for bring the artifact to Lewes. In 2018, Geisler submitted a request to the Navy to attain the artifact. 

"After the wait of about two years this piece of wreckage arrived in I believe March of 19 ... I mean 2020 and the construction of this exhibit has been ongoing ever since," Geisler said. 

"This exhibit is not just about the USS Arizona, but it is also about the residents of Delaware who were at Pearl Harbor during the attack and their contributions to the Navy's defense and the armys defense under attack at Pearl Harbor."

The exhibit includes an interactive experience, where you can meet and learn the stories of 22 Delawareans involved in the events of Dec. 7th 1941. There are two video screens playing historical footage of the bombings of Pearl Harbor, as well as underwater footage of the sunken ships. 

Oil Still Bleeds exhibit will remain open from now until Dec. 2022. The museum is open every Wednesday thru Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to. 4:00 p.m. Guided tours through the museum are also available.
