EASTON, MD - As the holiday season kicks off, Tuesday marked a special occasion dedicated to fostering the spirit of giving.

Giving Tuesday, a global movement, encourages individuals to contribute to charitable causes, ranging from school organizations to those aiding veterans and the less fortunate. In the heart of this philanthropic effort is the Mid-Shore Community Foundation, hosting its second annual Giving Tuesday event, aptly named Mid-Shore Gives 2023.

With participation from over 75 organizations across six counties, the focus of this day is to rally support for the local community. Christy Morrell, representing the Critchlow Adkins Children's Center in Talbot County, emphasizes the impact of today's donations on their mission.

"Forty-five percent of the children in our programs receive some form of tuition assistance, amounting to approximately $40,000 a year," Morrell explains.

She underscores the critical nature of these contributions, citing examples of families who have benefited from tuition assistance in the past. "We have a family where part of it is living in a group home, and one member is separated. By providing tuition assistance, their child can come to Critchlow every day."

Among the notable recipients of Tuesday's donations is the Veteran and Military Support Alliance (VAMSA), located in Queen Anne's County. As the sole veteran PTSD support group on the Eastern Shore, VAMSA plays a crucial role in aiding veterans and their families. Executive Director Eric Johnson expresses their aspirations for utilizing the funds.

"We want to do more activities. Our office here is right on the Chesapeake Bay; we have boats. This spring, we want to start putting veterans, their families, and spouses who might need some respite on a boat, taking them over to the Naval Academy," Johnson shares.

The donations received on Giving Tuesday will contribute to the expansion of VAMSA's programs, ensuring continued support for those who have served.

Today's collective effort emphasizes the significance of aiding organizations dedicated to helping anyone in need, embodying the true spirit of the holiday season.
