SALISBURY, Md. - If you're driven past the Centre at Salisbury mall recently, you may have noticed construction outside Boscov's. Work has already started to add an 18,000-square-foot extension to the north end of the department store.
The company's extension was considered back in March at the Salisbury-Wicomico Planning Commission meeting. The added space will allow the company to move a few things around.
"The courtesy desk will come downstairs as well as the auditorium and we'll have restrooms on the first floor," said Salisbury Boscov's General Manager Joe Nastase.
Nastase said the company is putting millions of dollars into the renovations. Once the outside extension is finished, Nastase says work will start to remodel each of the departments inside.
"It's really exciting. I've been the store manager here for 12 years and the store is 30-years-old," Nastase said. "And it looks the way it did when we first opened, so it's going to be total renovations."
Many shoppers we spoke with say they're excited to see the added space as well as the move to bring more departments on the first floor.
"A lot of people, they can't go on the elevator," Loretta Weber said. "I think it's easier for the older people like me."
Nastase said the outside expansion is expected to finish in the middle of December, with inside renovations following.
In a statement to WBOC, Boscov's Chairman and CEO Jim Boscov said: "Salisbury has been a wonderful market for us, with remarkable customers and coworkers. We're investing millions of dollars in the store on a major renovation that will include an expansion to offer a wider selection to our customers and a total refresh to bring the store up to date to reflect what Boscov's looks like today. We will be open throughout the entire renovation process which will take several months, and we're looking forward to celebrating our grand reopening with you."
