Gelmer Navaro-Chavez

SALISBURY, MD - A 30-year-old man has been arrested on DUI charges in Salisbury after a Tuesday evening head-on collision that left one person in critical condition.

The Salisbury Police Department says they were called to the area of E. Salisbury Parkway and Hobbs Road just before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 10th, on reports of a car traveling west in the eastbound lanes. While enroute, police were alerted to a head-on collision involving two vehicles in the area.

Upon arrival to the crash, Salisbury police conducted an investigation and allegedly found Gelmer Navaro-Chavez, 30, was driving the wrong way in the eastbound lanes when his car struck another head-on. Navaro-Chavez was standing outside his car when authorities arrived, police say. The driver of the second car, a 38-year-old man, was reportedly trapped in the vehicle. Police say the Salisbury and Pittsville Fire Departments successfully extracted the other driver who was then flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore.

Navaro-Chavez was taken to Tidal Health Peninsula Regional and then arrested upon his release on suspicion of driving under the influence. He faces the following charges.:

Failure to Obey Traffic Control Device, Reckless Driving, Failure to Control Speed to Avoid Collision Driving Wrong Way, Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Driving While Impaired by Alcohol

The driver of the second car remains in critical but stable condition, according to the Salisbury Police Department.
