GEORGETOWN, DE — The future location of two police memorials in Georgetown took center stage at a packed Town Council meeting Monday night, as community members voiced strong support for keeping the monuments at the Circle.

The monuments honor Patrolman Chad Spicer and former Police Chief Harvey Gregg Jr.

Early discussions proposed possibly relocating the monuments to the site of Georgetown's new police station. This, after multiple accidents on the circle damaged the monuments.

Multiple family members for both Patrolman Spicer and Chief Gregg spoke passionately before council members, including Spicer's Daughter, Aubrey, who insisted that her father's memorial remain at the town’s center.

"Tonight I’m asking, no actually I’m insisting, that this council find a solution to allow the monument to remain right where it belongs," she said while addressing council.

Spicer said it is important for her and her family to have the memorial at the 'heart' of town to remember her father, who gave his life serving it,

"Knowing that I have his memory, and knowing that I can ride by every day, and see something that people are able to come to, and look at every day, and remember him," she said.

Mayor Bill West told the crowd that discussions about moving the monuments were based on safety concerns — for both the monuments and the people visiting them. He added that relocating the memorials to the new police station was seen as a way to honor the officers' legacies while ensuring safety.

However, West announced that the town would reform the Circle Advisory Committee to work collaboratively with families and residents to find the best solution — one that could allow the monuments to remain at the Circle.

"I do not have a problem with putting them back on the Circle, if we can put them in a location that is safe for people to congregate, and people can go to for services, and be safe in that Circle," West said.

Spicer’s family said they are hopeful about working with the town and the new committee to find a secure and safe location on the Georgetown Circle to honor both fallen officers.
