BERLIN, MD - The Maryland State Police Berlin Barrack has announced intensified efforts to combat DUIs over the weekend with an increase in deployed troopers.

Drivers can expect to see an increased number of troopers on roads across Worcester County on Saturday, February 3rd at 10 p.m. through Sunday, February 4th at 1 a.m. State Police say. The increased enforcement is in response to what the Maryland State Police say are alarming statistics from Zero Deaths Maryland, a state program that monitors driving deaths. In 2022 alone, there were 135 fatal crashes involving DUIs, according to State Police.

"The safety of our community is our top priority," stated Lt. Earl Starner, Commander of the Berlin Barrack. "With this initiative, we aim to significantly reduce DUI incidents, thereby ensuring safer travel for everyone on our roads."

State Police say the increase in DUI enforcement is part of a larger strategy to promote responsible driving and prevent tragedies.
