DOVER, Del. - Troopers say the suspect was released on his own recognizance.
Delaware State Police say they arrested 23-year-old Damien Swift of Dover on burglary charges on the morning of Monday, Dec. 4
Troopers say around 2:35 a.m. that morning, a burglary alarm went off at Valero, located at 1491 S. Governors Avenue. When troopers arrived, they reportedly found shattered glass from the front door.
Troopers say a review of the video surveillance showed that a white man, wearing gray sweatpants, black sneakers, and a blue & white flannel shirt with a gray hood, had broken the glass on the front door of Valero. He then allegedly used his hand to create an opening to unlock the door and enter the store.
Once inside, state police say the suspect stole multiple cans of chewing tobacco before fleeing the scene. The suspect was later identified by authorities as Damien Swift, and he was found at a nearby hospital, wearing the same clothing observed in the video surveillance.
Swift was taken into custody after receiving medical treatment for the injuries to his hand and transported to Troop 3, where he was charged with the following crimes:
- Burglary Third (Felony)
- Theft Under $1500
- Criminal Mischief
Swift was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 7 and released on his own recognizance.
