DELAWARE- Volunteers are stepping up to ensure that those in need have something to eat and somewhere to go for Thanksgiving Day.
Milford's House of David, a non-profit, will host a community Thanksgiving celebration at Jesus Love Temple on S. Walnut Street from noon to 2 p.m.
Members began setting up Wednesday afternoon. Richard Snipes, who has been with the church for nearly 45 years, said it is a long-standing tradition. "The turnout is really great," he said. "It fills the house."
Snipes added, "For Thanksgiving, come one, come all; we are feeding the community."
In Dover, Calvary Church is gearing up to deliver nearly 2,000 meals Thursday. Although the church is no longer taking orders, volunteers started early Wednesday, breaking into groups to create the perfect Thanksgiving plate.
Calvary Church Administrator Dorothy Wood explained what's included for those receiving deliveries.
"A complete hot meal with turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, gravy, stuffing, green beans, and cranberry sauce," she said.
Wood tells WBOC the demand for the church's Thanksgiving service is constantly increasing.
"Last year we served more than 1,600, so only about 100 more, but still, every year it has been growing."
This prompts the church to expand its outreach, delivering to communities in all three counties.
"We go as far north as Townsend, as far west as Marydel, and as far south as Ellendale," Wood noted.
Big efforts are being made to ensure no one goes hungry this Thanksgiving Day in Delaware.
