COEBURN, Va. - Convicted Accomack County arsonist Charles Smith is expected to be released from prison on Tuesday.
Smith and his then-fiance Tonya Bundick were responsible for more than sixty arsons in Accomack County that were set between November of 2012 and April of 2013. The couple targeted abandoned structures.
Smith pled guilty to his role in the arson spree on Halloween of 2013. According to the Virginia Department of Corrections, Smith was set to be released from prison on Tuesday, October 31, 2023.
At trial, Smith testified against Bundick, saying he set the Accomack County fires, but that the arson spree was her idea.
Smith has been held at the Wise Correctional Center in Coeburn, Virginia in the far Western part of the state.
Bundick is expected to remain behind bars until September of 2025.
WBOC provided extensive coverage of the Accomack County arsons, including the trial for Smith and Bundick. In 2022, WBOC's Steve Hammond hosted a thirty minute special on the arson spree, which can be seen here. Steve, along with News Director Ron Krisulevicz and Assistant News Director Bill Mich won a regional Emmy Award for that special.
