FENWICK ISLAND, DE- A young seal found along the Fenwick Island shores is lucky to be alive.

The MERR Institute announced that a grey seal pup was discovered on Monday with multiple puncture wounds, believed to be animal bites. Officials say further assessment found the pup needed nutritional support and fluids.

They say the seal, nicknamed Pisces, was taken to the National Aquarium in Baltimore for further care.

MERR says his condition could have worsened without veterinary intervention and would likely have been deadly.

MERR is reminding beachgoers to maintain a distance of 150 feet, keep dogs on a leash, and report seals immediately by calling MERR's stranding hotline at 302-228-5029. Their team of experts will diagnose the seal to determine if it is a healthy seal in need of rest, or a seal in need of fluids and other lifesaving care.
