ASSATEAGUE, Md.- Maryland Natural Resources Police have confirmed a second man drowned Sunday off the coast of Assateague Island.
Police said the first drowning happened at around noon, when Steven Durr, 57, of Chantilly, Virginia, began to struggle for reasons that are still unknown. Durr and a 17-year-old girl were removed from the water but Durr later died at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.
Police said that a few hours later an 18-year-old man, identified as Brian Purnell, of Pittsburgh, drowned due to riptide currents off the coast. He was also taken to AGH, where he was pronounced dead.
The teen rescued in the first incident, was treated and released later Sunday. Police are not releasing her name due to her age.
